Trump cancelled the planned strike on Iran, saying the "perimeters" of a deal had been reached and that negotiations with Tehran would begin Monday, with no deadline set. He said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran had all asked him to call it off. Iranian military sources rejected the account that Tehran had pleaded for restraint as a "new lie," and acting Defence Minister Majid Ebn-e-Reza called the pullback part of "psychological operations and a war of calculations." Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said separately that the Oman track on the strait was progressing.
Three Gulf states asking Washington to stand down is the clearest sign yet that the hosts of the campaign are now its brake. It also means the pause rests on regional pressure rather than on anything Iran conceded.
